The Bhagavad Gita is the divine words of Sri Krishna first spoken to Arjuna in Kurukshetra over five thousand years ago where Lord Krishna preached the universal and immortal gospel on the Art of living to all humanity, making Arjuna the medium through which this perennial teaching was given to all mankind.
Gita Jayanti is observed at this time for over five thousand years. Written in verse form, to which Sanskrit lends itself very easily, it contains the advice given by Lord Krishna about the duties of life as well as spiritual obligations.
The Bhagavad Gita emphasizes the importance of knowledge, charity, penance and worship, and does not decry life as evil. The Gita brims with spiritual truths that lead mankind to a divine life. It is considered as the revelation given by Lord Krishna to Arjuna in the battlefield to help him resolve his mental conflict, and was put in the present form by Sage Veda Vyasa.
In India, ever since the great Shankara wrote his commentary on the Gita, many eminent scholars of the vedanta philosophy have given their interpretation of this exemplary text. It is not the ancient Indian thinkers alone, but many leaders of modern times had also taken it as a text for expounding their noblest thoughts.
Many books such as Tilak’s Gita Rahasya, Aurobindo’s essays on the Gita and Mahatma Gandhi’s Anasakti Yoga show the continued preference and admiration for the Bhagavad Gita over the centuries. The English writer and thinker Aldous Huxley described the Geeta as, Quote “the most systematic statement of spiritual evolution of enduring value to mankind. In his view, it is the clearest and most comprehensive summary of perennial philosophy ever revealed. “Unquote.
